Growing up in Lancaster County, PA, I was fortunate to be part of a community that valued inclusivity and support for individuals with disabilities. Manor Church, where I attended church most of my childhood, had a wonderful disability ministry that left a lasting impact on my life. One of the standout programs was Respite, where children with various mental and physical disabilities were welcomed for a Saturday a month for day of activities with trained buddies, allowing their guardians to enjoy a much-needed break.
Sundays were equally special as children were paired with buddies who accompanied them to Sunday school, providing a supportive environment for spiritual growth while their guardians attended the church service. Through Manor Church, I discovered Joni and Friends, a Christian organization based in the United States, dedicated to providing opportunities for individuals with special needs.
One such opportunity that left a mark on my heart was the Joni and Friends Summer Camp. Children with special needs were paired with buddies who guided them through a variety of camp activities, allowing families to bond or pursue their own interests. It was during these moments that I encountered the impact of assistive technology.
Amidst the laughter and camp fun, I noticed that not all children had access to the right equipment. Some were limited by devices that didn't fully meet their needs, hindering their ability to participate in activities with the same freedom as their peers. This sparked a passion for me to make a difference in the lives of those with special needs through assistive technology.
Today, as I reflect on my early experiences at Manor Church and the Joni and Friends Summer Camp, I am grateful for the foundation they provided. They not only opened my eyes to the challenges faced by individuals with special needs but also ignited a lifelong commitment to making a positive difference in their lives through the power of assistive technology.
